Located near the town of Duck on North Carolina's Atlantic Coast, the Duck Pier Field Research Facility is an internationally recognized coastal observatory. Free guided tours are offered during summer months, Monday through Friday at 10am only. The guided walking tour is on a sand trail that may be difficult for elderly or the physically challenged. This is the location where the first successful substained power flights (in a heavier-than-air machine) were made. To dedicate the events Wilbur and Orville Wright built a large 60-foot granite monument back in 1903. Museum exhibits are available as well as tours of the first flight trail area.
